History

The School was constructed by VSB in 1913 to a design by the Architect David Hormer (1915 - 1960). VSB liked the design and ended up using it for 3 schools. Laura Secord took 4 months of construction to complete and 1 year to start the school working. The school continued to grow with students, causing changes to be made to the building. In 1973, the VSB spent $40,000 for the construction of a gymnasium. The gym was easily constructed in 2 months, with painting completed in a week. In 1999, Laura Secord Elementary needed a new foundation as well as a new wing that was connected to the original structure, at a cost of $850,000.

École Laura Secord School is a substantial brick building with heritage status constructed in 1913. In September 2001 the new wing addition was completed at the rear of the building and the first French immersion class was welcomed to the school to commence the dual track school that now exists at Secord.[2]

Seismic Upgrades

The school is undergoing Seismic Upgrades to the main building starting January 2010 and lasting until approximately January 2012. During this time students will be in portable classrooms that are located on the playing field of the school. Access to the school is off East Broadway and 10th Avenue during construction as the Lakewood entrance is in the construction site.
